Honour Our Veterans

Honour our veterans

In 2010, Chartwell Retirement Residences published HONOUR to commemorate Canada’s Second World War veterans and those who supported the war effort. Through images taken by world renowned photographer Yuri Dojc and profiles written by Sharon Henderson, the book captured 35 veterans living in Chartwell residences across Canada.

Chartwell was motivated to initiate this project after Canada lost its last remaining First World War veteran. It was an acute reminder of how quickly history was passing for those that had served in the Second World War and how critical it is to preserve their stories for future generations. For a number of participants, this was the first time they had spoken at length about their experiences. Others struggled against both the effects of time and the emotions they had buried for years.

However difficult, these were stories that needed to be told and individuals that needed to be recognized for the benefit of future generations. All proceeds from the sale of the book have been donated to Canadian organizations committed to the remembrance of Canada’s veterans.

We are pleased to have been able to contribute to the remembrance of our veterans and the recognition of their important sacrifices.
