Freedom & a Fresh Start in Senior Living: Helen’s Story
“I’d had enough,” Helen says, with a quiet certainty. “I sold the house.”
At 74, Helen is soft-spoken, with a calm, thoughtful way of speaking and the hint of a Northern Irish accent that hasn’t faded over time. There’s true confidence in how she tells her story, especially when it comes to the decision that brought her to live at Chartwell Waterford in Oakville, Ontario.
After the passing of her husband, Helen found herself living alone in a large home, complete with a pool and a property that once made sense for a full household, but no longer matched what she wanted from day-to-day life.
“It was just me there,” she says. “And it’s a lot of work.”
While some people struggle with the idea of leaving their family home, Helen didn’t see it that way. For her, it wasn’t about holding on, but about moving forward. She was open to the idea of retirement living from the start, with no hesitation or preconceived notions. Her daughters were supportive, encouraging her to consider a place where she could be surrounded by people and simplify her lifestyle.
“Let’s get somewhere where you can be with people,” she recalls them saying. “I didn’t want to stay in the house, so I was ready.”
Helen began looking at options with her daughters, but the search didn’t take long.
“I knew this was the place,” she says with a smile, remembering how she felt when she walked into Chartwell Waterford for the first time.
Part of what stood out to her was the atmosphere. Unlike larger residences, Chartwell Waterford felt more intimate, which mattered to her.
“It’s not a big high-rise,” she explains. “I like that. It feels more personal here.”
Just as important were the people.
“The staff is amazing,” she says. “Anything you need, they’re always there to help.”
Location also played a key role in her decision. Though she had spent years living in Mississauga, Helen chose to move to Oakville to be closer to one of her daughters, who lives just 15 minutes away.
Some people may hesitate to consider retirement living, worried their family may visit less often—but that hasn’t been the case for Helen. Her daughters visit and call regularly and remain an active part of her day-to-day life.
“We have a close family,” she explains. “Both of my daughters are always in touch.”
Financially, Helen approached her transition to a retirement residence with the same clarity she brought to the decision itself. After selling her home, she made a conscious choice to share a portion of the proceeds with her family—supporting her children and helping her grandsons with their education—while setting aside the rest to fund her lifestyle today.
“I gave my children an early inheritance,” she says. “And I’m happy that I did that.”
For Helen, it wasn’t about holding onto everything for later. It was about making thoughtful decisions that felt right for her and for her family.
Her life at Chartwell Waterford reflects that mindset.
Today, Helen enjoys a comfortable one-bedroom suite without the burden of maintaining a larger home. Her days are simpler, more manageable, and filled with opportunities to be with others. And she’s found something she didn’t necessarily expect; companionship with fellow resident, George.
The two met at the residence and quickly formed a connection, one that now adds a sense of fun and spontaneity to their days. She laughs as she recalls one of their recent outings together.
“He said, ‘let’s go for a little drive.’ Well…three hours later,” she chuckles. “That’s not what I’d call a little drive, would you?”
It’s a small moment, but it says a lot.
Helen made a clear and confident choice to shape this next chapter of her life on her own terms. And today, that life is exactly what she hoped it would be: connected, comfortable, and full of possibility.
