Long Term Care

What is Long Term Care?

Long term care residences—historically also referred to as nursing homes—are licensed and authorized as government-regulated and funded homes. They are designed for individuals who require the availability of 24-hour nursing care or advanced dementia support within a secure setting.

Depending on the availability of the Long Term Care residence you are interested in for your loved one, you may have the option of private, semi-private or ward room accommodation.

For residents of Ontario, all applications to Long Term Care homes are coordinated by individual community Local Health Integration Networks (LHIN), who plan, integrate and fund local health care. There are 14 LHINs in Ontario. To locate the LHIN in your region, please visit their website.

Known in Quebec as Centre d'hébergement de soins de longue durée (CHSLD), government-funded and private long term care in the province are available options. Private CHSLDs offer private and semi-private rooms and provide a housing alternative for seniors, given long waiting lists for accommodation within the public health and social services network.

Chartwell does not currently operate any CHSLDs in the province; however, many of our retirement residences maintain strong relationships with local CHSLDs in both the private and public health network, should any of our residents eventually require long term care services.

British Columbia

Also known as Residential Care, Chartwell offers both government-funded and private pay long term care in Nanaimo, Langley, Surrey and Burnaby. Applicable Regional Health Authorities in those locations coordinate admission and will perform an assessment to determine eligibility. Please reach out to your local health authority for more information.
