March 02, 2021

We are grateful that our homes have been prioritized in the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine. Although vaccinations in Canada have been lagging behind those in other developed countries, recently the pace has accelerated particularly for prioritized seniors in LTC homes and Retirement Residences. We are beginning to see the positive effects of the vaccinations as evidenced in the rapidly declining number of outbreaks in our homes and the lower number of resident and staff cases.

The vaccine brings optimism and hope, and today, it is our best defense against the virus that has plagued our lives for the past year. That is why we are encouraging every staff member, resident, and caregiver that lives, works, or visits our homes to get vaccinated, as soon as possible. Our recent videos (https://youtu.be/jVUhA2r_1-U and https://youtu.be/2g5sa4Dz_YE) help to debunk some common myths, clarify misinformation, and alleviate fears with respect to the vaccines. I hope you will find them both informative and educational. We want our staff to feel confident and secure coming to work each day; we want our residents to feel they are protected; and we want our families to have peace of mind knowing their loved ones are safe and supported.

Annually, we conduct a Chartwell Brand Awareness Survey with Ipsos, a market research company. The 2020 survey included over 3,200 people over the age of 45 in the four provinces we operate. The survey confirmed that the pandemic has negatively impacted peoples’ sentiment of retirement living with more people indicating a hesitancy to move to retirement living than before. I believe that once various restrictions are lifted, this sentiment will change as retirement residences fulfill an important need for socialization, services, and assistance with activities of daily living that cannot be as easily satisfied in other settings. Chartwell is well-positioned to fulfil that need, in part, because of its strong brand. The survey confirmed that Chartwell continues to have the highest brand awareness of all industry participants in Ontario, Alberta, and B.C., and has the second highest brand awareness in the Quebec market.

We would not have been able to achieve these results without the immense contributions of our employees and their exceptional dedication over the past year. We are also thankful for the inspiring stories from our residences that have been shared with us. Our talented Marketing and Communications team members have done an outstanding job cultivating and sharing these stories at Chartwell and with the general public through various media outlets. These stories are authentic, uplifting, and heartwarming and the world needs them now more than ever.

Thank you. For Everything.

The Chartwell Experience

Brenda, a resident at Chartwell Clair Hills in Waterloo, Ontario

Brenda, a resident at Chartwell Clair Hills in Waterloo, Ontario loves to be creative and always enjoyed pre-COVID art classes offered at the residence on a weekly basis. Since the pandemic, they were unable to offer those classes anymore, so the Lifestyle Team created take-away art kits to supply residents with everything they need to complete a beautiful Artful Aging Project in their suite. This is such a creative program that gives residents a chance for imaginative and therapeutic fun. Pictured here is Brenda and her beautiful iceberg painting! Thank you to our Lifestyle Team for continuing to offer residents unique ways to creatively express themselves during this time.
