January 12, 2021

Happy New Year! It was a holiday season like we’ve never seen before, however I hope you still found safe and creative ways to connect with your family and friends to enjoy this special time of the year together.

On behalf of all of us at Chartwell, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our residents and their families and friends for supporting us during the holiday season by remaining physically distant and following provincial and local health protocols; our staff and residents appreciate that you put your health, as well as that of our residents, before all else.

I’d also like to give a special shout-out to our employees who worked during the holidays, as they took time away from their families and friends to make the season special for our residents, helping to keep them feeling uplifted, reassured and supported. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you do and for your unyielding dedication to our collective mission of Making People’s Lives BETTER. As I reflect on the past year, I’m so appreciative and proud of the work our employees have done and continue to do to help protect our residents, their families, and each other. This time last year, the pandemic had yet to arrive on Canadian shores, but when it did arrive, it did so unexpectedly, putting the entire country—and our industry—into full-scale crisis mode. We learned, we adjusted, and we grew together.

Today, Chartwell has a robust plan, a pipeline of PPE, and a wealth of knowledge and experience that our teams draw upon every day. All of us feel encouraged by the ongoing rollout of the vaccine and swell with pride when we think of our employees who were among the first in the country to receive it. While the rollout has been slower than I would have liked, we all remain grateful to start the new year with a sense of hope. And as it continues, I strongly encourage everyone to take the first opportunity they get to receive the vaccination so we can work toward a return to the normal existence we all crave.

Late in 2020, we completed collective bargaining agreements for 21 retirement residences in Ontario with SEIU, and for nine retirement residence in Quebec with SQEES-298. These three- and four-year agreements provide support and stability for over 1,700 Chartwell employees and demonstrate that, despite the pandemic and through collaboration and good-faith negotiations, positive outcomes are possible and worth striving for. We are committed to continued collaboration with our union partners in the future. Click here to read more.

On January 1, 2021, our Board Chair Mike Harris was appointed to the Order of Ontario. Mike served as the Premier of Ontario from 1995 to 2002. Among Mike’s many achievements as the Premier was the largest investment in Ontario’s history to expand long term care for the province’s seniors. This included the creation of 20,000 new long-term care beds and the redevelopment of 16,000 existing beds. Please join me in congratulating Mike and his family on this great achievement.

I hope that 2021 will be a better year for all of us and will bring you and your families safety, health, and a renewed appreciation for what matters most, including the people around us.
