Explore the different accommodation options at Chartwell

It used to be that moving to a retirement residence meant moving to a single room, with few options as to layout or size. Those days are long gone, as today’s seniors have a wide range of accommodation styles available at retirement communities.

Suites

Retirement residence suites are the most popular choice among seniors choosing community living settings. Suites can range in size and layout, including studio, one- or two-bedroom, or one- or two-bedroom plus den options, all on one level and each with their own private bath. Many also have kitchenettes for light meal preparation, and may also have features such as a balcony or walk-out patio.

Apartments

Some retirement communities feature apartments, either integrated into the residence or in a separate building on the premises. Like suites, apartments are available in a wide-choice of layouts and sizes; however, apartments also have full kitchens for the capability of cooking larger meals (i.e. you could cook a full Thanksgiving dinner if you wanted to!).

Senior Townhomes

Select Chartwell retirement communities also offer seniors townhomes on the premises. Townhomes usually come equipped with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, in-suite laundry and private driveways or garages.

Cottages/Bungalows

A smaller number of retirement residences also offer separate cottages or bungalows. Like townhomes, they typically feature two spacious bedrooms, a full kitchen, in-suite laundry and parking.

Choosing the right accommodation type for your lifestyle

So with all of these choices, how do you know what will be right for you?

First, decide what kind of lifestyle best suits you. Seniors who choose Independent Living (IL) are typically looking for opportunities to socialize and a worry-free, secure lifestyle, and may opt for an apartment, townhome or bungalow, as these accommodation types provide the ability to cook regular meals and convenient options like parking.

If you require a little more support, Independent Supportive Living (ISL) offers an independent lifestyle along with extra services, such as included meals, housekeeping, laundry and the option of personal support services, such as help with dressing or medication administration.

If ISL works best for you, a retirement living suite would be the best choice. Many seniors appreciate the convenience of a suite that provides easy accessibility to the rest of the residence. When they aren’t enjoying meals in the residence dining room or bistro, the option to prepare light meals in their kitchenette when desired is also there.

When thinking about what lifestyle option and accommodation type might be right for you or a loved one, consider:

  • How much do I like to cook? Do I want a full kitchen, or if I plan on taking meals in the dining room, do I need that?
  • How much space will I need? How many bedrooms would I need to be comfortable?
  • If I’m moving in with my spouse, would we enjoy an extra bedroom for hobbies or to have the grandkids stay over?

Remember, regardless of your decision, retirement living typically includes many common amenities that lessen your need for a larger home. For example, imagine having a craft room, fitness studio, library, games room, home theatre, party room, private dining room, worship space, indoor/outdoor garden and walking path—all as an extension of your living space!
