Chartwell celebrates National Seniors Day on October 1st

October 1st isn’t just the start of a beautiful fall month – it’s also National Seniors Day, a time when Canadians honour older adults who have made – and continue to make – their community a better place. Chartwell retirement residences across Canada are celebrating the day by throwing entertaining events for their residents. Each location has its own way of celebrating with an array of fun activities, including musical, seasonal and artistic programs.

Music
A great way for older adults to enjoy the day and get moving, live music is a big part of the celebrations at Chartwell. At Chartwell Willow in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, there will be a live piano player gracing the stage to entertain residents. The tempo will change from fast to slow throughout so seniors and their families can join in on the dance floor. Similarly, at Chartwell Royalcliffe in London, Ontario, there will be a live swing band to keep spirits high and honour the historical era. Chartwell Cedarbrooke in Mission, British Columbia, is getting in on the dance action as well with a ‘Hillbilly Ho-Down,’ complete with a themed entertainer, line dancing and Western-influenced games.

Fall Activities
It wouldn’t be right to celebrate the day without incorporating some classic seasonal fun. Residents at Chartwell Christopher Terrace in Burlington, Ontario, are spending the afternoon at Springridge Farm where they will enjoy warm apple cider and pie and sit among the pumpkins. They will also have the chance to buy their own fresh fruit to take home and include in some of their favourite fall recipes.

Chartwell Muskoka in Huntsville, Ontario, is also celebrating its residents by visiting “Bog-to-Bottle,” a cranberry marsh tour in Bala. Residents will enjoy a wagon ride in the delightful fall weather, followed by a wine tasting and a visit to the gift shop. Likewise, Chartwell Willow plans to celebrate both seniors and the fall season with a pumpkin tea party, complete with pumpkin treats, spiced teas and coffee.

Another tea party will be taking place at Chartwell Gibson in North York, Ontario. Seniors there will be invited to make their own tea cookies and participate in a tea tasting, followed by an appreciation dinner. In London, Ontario, residents at Chartwell Royalcliffe will visit the grounds of Fanshawe Pioneer Village and stop at the old printing press after a chili or soup lunch in a quaint café.

Among some of the many activities taking place in Chartwell retirement residences in Quebec, the apple picking at Chartwell Jardins de la Gare, as well as the  arts and crafts activity of mask decorating at Chartwell Marquis de Tracy, are sure to be fun!

Artistic readings
Art is another great way to engage seniors and get them excited for their special day. Residents at Chartwell Muskoka are celebrating with a local writing group that recently wrote up some biographies on their current residents. On the evening of National Seniors Day, the group will recite their stories in front of residents and their friends and families. Residents can try to guess who is being profiled, and those who correctly answer will receive a prize.
