A resident turning 100 is a milestone, but celebrating two century birthdays in the same month is a truly rare occurrence. That’s what happened at Chartwell Anne Hathaway when staff and residents gathered to honour centenarians Chris Fisher and Theo Gilliland. As piano music played in the background, the two reluctant celebrities stood front and centre to cut their strawberry-lined birthday cakes in front of a large crowd of well-wishers. They’ve lived through two World Wars, the Depression and have seen technological and cultural change beyond belief. So what’s their secret to longevity? “Don’t think about it,” said Gilliland. “Just live.”
